Some threads on the Mathworks forum suggest that R2020b Update 4 or later for Intel Macs can work under Rosetta2 emulation? I’d assumed that would translate into running PTB for IntelMacs as well. I am surprised a bit that PTB for Matlab or Octave on macOS would not work at all.

The NeuroDebian VM or something else custom made? I assume only a Linux distribution for 64-Bit ARM (aarch64) will work, as macOS 11 Big Sur’s Rosetta2 code translator doesn’t work for software in a VM, as far as i understood? Hence also why Matlab for Intel processors doesn’t work, because it would be untranslatable Intel code in a VM. again a Linux in a VM is only useful for teaching purpose, not for data collection. that’s a bit of cheating, but the good kind of cheating, as you are not actually running Psychtoolbox on macOS with Apple M1, but you are running Psychtoolbox for Linux in a VM.

TL DR: So long as you’re not trying to record participant data accurately, it’s definitely possible to run PsychToolBox on Mac M1.ĮTA: sounds like this is exactly what Howard needs, though! I’m using parallels to run the VM for now, and I’m going to work on running it on Mac directly, but I think this will be harder.
So far I’ve not got it running on the Mac directly, but I do have a Linux VM set up using octave (MATLAB for Linux doesn’t work with arm chips).

In my opinion, that’s how everybody should use Apple computers for neuroscience only, for entertainment and teaching use only - and even that only if one finds masochism entertaining and educational. I will later run all experiments on a Linux machine in the lab (but during covid it’s helpful to practice at home) To be completely clear, I am not using PsychToolBox on Mac M1 to run experiments - just to practice and write code. I just wanted to add a quick update on this. Alternative high quality operating systems like Linux won’t work either, apart from within a Virtual machine, ie. This means that our PsychtoolboxKernelDriver will not work on them at all, most likely not ever, and that means we have no software way of proper timing or timestamping, detecting timing- or other problems, or working around any problems. The M1 ARM Macs only have Apple proprietary graphics chips of unknown quality with no public documentation about their inner workings or low-level programming at all. Experience taught me that that is a bad idea, unless one has a disposable machine.

I don’t have any machine or time to spare for testing macOS 11 at the moment, and given some reports on how bad macOS 11 can be in many cases, up to the point of totally bricking machines, i don’t intend to install it on the only production machine i have any time soon. I think OpenGL is still supported on macOS 11 and these new machines, so basic graphics etc.
MacOS 11 is not tested and not officially supported in any way with the current 3.0.17 releases. Nobody has tested this so far, to my knowledge.
